Lip Surgery

The Peri oral or the Lip region is an extremely important area when it comes to facial aesthetic enhancement. The lips have since time immemorial been highlighted along with the eyes as the two most beautiful regions of a woman's or a man's face. With the passage of time, photodamage, hereditary factors, and smoking contribute to loss of lip volume, perioral rhytides, and prominence of mentolabial folds. Aging also causes elongation and increase in the vertical length of the lip thus covering the upper teeth when smiling. Genetically thin lips and cosmetic asymmetries of the lips are also issues that can be dealt with similarly, that is, by soft tissue augmentations using fillers. Successful rejuvenation of the perioral region requires sophistication in using a combination of technologies and injectables.

People may be suffering from a congenital defect of the lip (torn lip from childbirth) which has been repaired not too aesthetically during childhood. This can also be improved as part of the lip surgery.

The usual procedures indicated in the lip are as follows

  • Permanent Lip Augmentation surgery.
  • Lip Reduction.
  • Lip Lift.
  • Revision of Cleft lip surgery.

Lip Augmentation Surgery-

It's a fact of life that not everyone is blessed with that ideal set of full lips. Most of us fall into one of the common lip shape categories, which we will cover along with their perceived shortcomings. But we can console ourselves with the thought that the beautiful lips that we conjure up in our minds are within our grasp, thanks to a plethora of lip augmentation procedures.

The commonest way to enlarge lips is by using a Filler. This is discussed under the section Lip Augmentation.

Surgical lip augmentation can be undertaken using the following techniques-

  • Alloderm is a sheet of collagen created from deceased humans. It can be inserted through tiny incisions made on the inside part of the lip. This material offers only a temporary fix, lasting up to 12 months.
  • Fat grafting is the surgical method of inserting your own fat into your lips to achieve the desired fullness. You may achieve permanent results, but this method varies from person to person. Because it's your own fat, there is a chance that your body can reabsorb it.
  • Goretex, SoftForm, and soft ePTFE are synthetic materials that can achieve a permanent result. Unlike some of the other options we've listed above, your body will not absorb these. However, because they are synthetic, there is a risk of an allergic reaction.
  • Local grafts taken from areas hidden from exposure is a surgical procedure that takes tissue and skin from the back of the ear, tendon, etc. It's far more invasive than any other technique but the outcome achieved is far more permanent and natural.

Lip Reduction Surgery-

Large lips are a common complaint in many Indian and African men. This can be corrected by a simple surgery known as lip reduction. A lip reduction is a surgical procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia or with sedation. The key to lip reduction is to provide the correct amount of reduction with no visible scar and creating a natural result. A segment of the lip is removed from the inside of the lip so there is no visible scar.

The process of Lip reduction involves- making an incision along the entire length of your lip, usually at a place called the wet line—where the dry part of your lip meets the wet part. The incisions are placed within the lip so that the scars are not visible.

Next, we will remove a wedge of skin and tissue from the wet side along the length of the incision. The final step is closing the open wedge with fine stitches. Closing the wedge rolls the outer part of your lip inward, making your lip look thinner. Depending on the amount of skin and tissue being removed, the process should take about 15 to 30 minutes per lip.

Lip Lift-

Many patients are interested in an upper lip lift, or upper lip shortening as they are clearly bothered by an excessively long upper lip when looking straight on in the resting state (meaning without movement of the lip). Many people are more bothered by the upper lip hiding too much of their teeth during smiling. When we smile, for instance, it is normal for the upper lip to pull upward and out, revealing a good portion of your teeth. If the upper lip is excessively long, it can drape over the teeth to the point where even smiling will not allow sufficient visibility of the teeth.

A long lip can be very safely corrected by a Lip lift which involves making an incision under the nose where it meets the upper lip. This is called a sub-nasale upper lip lift since the incision is placed below the nose. Also known as “bull horn upper lip lift” based on the shape of the actual incision used for the lift. The upper limb of the incision follows the natural contour of the upper lip just below the nose. The lower limb approximates a mirror image of the upper limb and determines the amount of skin that will be removed. Once the excess amount of skin is removed, the upper lip is lifted by suturing the cut edges together.
