Breast Reconstruction After Cancer

A breast cancer diagnosis can be devastating. In addition to battling with the prospect of cancer, a woman might face the loss of a portion or all of her breasts. Facing the prospect of breast removal can be emotionally draining for many women. Fortunately, breast reconstruction surgery is now possible and can reshape the breasts to its normal form.

Breast reconstruction is possible at the same time as the cancer excision if it is an early stage or after the complete cure of cancer. This reconstruction method can help a woman gain her self-confidence back and feel better during her cancer recovery.

There are two main techniques for breast reconstruction

Implant-Based Reconstruction:

This is the most common technique for breast reconstruction and is usually done at the same time as the cancer surgery. Usually, silicone implants are used under the muscle. The benefits of this technique are that the breast retains its shape and the woman does not go through a psychological trauma of her breast loss.

Autologous or "flap" based reconstruction:

This technique involves the use of soft tissue and/or muscle from the abdomen of the back with or without a breast implant to reconstruct the breast. This technique is very beneficial when large breast have to be reconstructed and most of the skin has been removed.

Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. Implant reconstruction is a simpler surgery, easier to recover from and associated with less morbidity whereas flaps are more difficult to perform, more time-consuming and associated with more morbidity. Over time, implants are more prone to problems and often require additional procedures to correct these problems. Flaps function better over time; a flap done well doesn't need much attention over the course of a lifetime.

Typically, breast reconstruction is usually done at the time of mastectomy, and in some cases, breast reconstruction also can be done many months or even years after mastectomy. At Dr. Mohan Thomas Aesthetics we prefer undertaking the implant-based breast reconstruction along with the creation of the nipple and areola at a later stage to provide the lady with a procedure that will make her feel complete and whole.

Breast reconstruction is indicated in people who have a deficiency of their breast from birth, due to cancer surgery or trauma. This surgery may involve a transfer of muscle or tissue from other parts of the body with or without an implant to get enough volume in the breast. This procedure also involves creating a nipple and areola in people who have lost them.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in a female. It can be diagnosed when small and if treated early can be completely cured. The main treatment includes partial or complete removal of the breast which usually prevents further growth of cancer. Early diagnosis is very easily possible by a regular Mammogram or an MRI scan.

It takes a minimum of 2 weeks for early recovery from breast reconstruction surgery. If it is combined with breast cancer excision too, then the recovery is longer. Full recovery may require a minimum of 2 - 3 months.

Results are usually seen immediately, but the refinement in the result takes 4-6 months and may require small touch-up procedures.

Usually, there is some difference in both breasts as the normal breast will be larger, and more droopy as compared to the reconstructed breast. The reconstructed breast when implant based will be more perky, firm, and most people are in love with their new breasts.
