Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are employed to enhance the skin's appearance. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which abrades it and eventually peels the top layer off. The new skin is usually smooth and toned.

Who are the candidates for Filler Treatment?

Skin peeling is done for various indications like-

  • Treats fine lines caused by sun damage and aging.
  • Improves the appearance of mild scars like those caused by certain types of acne.
  • Reduces age spots, freckles, and dark patches ( melasma ) due to pregnancy or birth control pills.
  • Improves the look and feel of the skin on the face, hands, genital area and back.
  • These peels range from gentle to severe, depending on the requirement, like the patient with acne will require a milder peel, similarly patient with pigmentation will require a stronger peel. There are different types of peels depending on the depth to which the involvement of the skin is needed. Indian skin does not usually tolerate phenol peels as the chances of getting hyperpigmentation and scarring is very high. The strongest peel recommended for the Indian skin is the TCA peel which should be undertaken under the administration of a dermatologist or a cosmetic surgeon.

ISuperficial peels rarely require anesthesia but are accompanied by a burning sensation when the solution is applied. This can be reduced by the application of cool compresses and fan-aided evaporation. Deeper peels often require extensive local anesthesia, systemic sedation, and rarely, general anesthesia. The peeling procedure is initiated with the application of a defatting solvent (acetone or alcohol) which is wiped uniformly over the area to be treated. Then the medical professional will apply one or more chemical solutions -- such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid (phenol) -- to small areas of your skin creating a controlled wound, letting new skin take its place.

It is often suggested to pre-treat patients with tretinoin cream for a period of 12 weeks prior to the peel. People who get herpes infections should start on antiviral medications one week prior to the treatment, and continue taking these for two weeks after the therapy to prevent reactivation of cold sores. Those with darker skin tone may also need a pre-treatment with hydroquinone preparations. After the procedure, the skin is momentarily sensitive to the sun, so use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day as it protects against both the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Limit your time outdoors, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

If performed correctly in appropriate patients, the appearance of the treated skin will have a more youthful texture with a uniform color which will blend with the skin of the untreated area. Some skin types are more likely to develop a temporary or permanent color change in the skin after undergoing a chemical peel. Taking birth control pills, succeeding pregnancy, or a family archives of brownish discoloration on the face may make that more likely.

The risk of scarring is low in certain areas of the face. If scarring does happen, it can usually be treated with excellent results. Skincare routine before, during and after your peel. As a rule of thumb, avoid retinol and waxing one week prior to the peel. Also, if you’re prone to fever, blisters talk to your doctor about a prescription for an anti-viral medication to prevent an outbreak. Equally important is making sure that your skin care routine is set up like using very gentle cleansers, like Cetaphil. Avoid all your serums, acids and anything exfoliating for at least a week. If you go outside use sunscreen.

After your skin has peeled and restored, slowly introduce the stronger stuff back, but continue to avoid retinol and waxing for two weeks. One must never schedule a medium depth peel in less than 6 weeks time before a sunny beach vacation. Extreme temperatures can cause hyperpigmentation.

Do not exercise for at least for 48 hours

We recommend staying away from cardio sessions for 48 hours, especially when you have the type of peel you need to rinse off later at home. In addition, avoid swimming sessions while you’re healing as the chlorine can dry out your skin. Do not pick at your peeling skin! It’s exciting when your skin starts to peel, which will usually begin around the mouth/nose/chin area around day 3, and spread outward over several days. But, whatever you do, don’t be tempted to grab a piece of flake and drag it off. The best way to help your skin heal is to gently pat with a towel after you’ve washed your face, and apply a think coating of ointment.

These peels work best in a range of alternating types, but be cautious not to over-peel! Chemical peels can be complemented with microdermabrasion, retinol creams and lasers, but let your doctor coordinate your skin care and maintain it.
