How To prepare for Your Eyelid Surgery

By Dr. Mohan Thomas Aesthetics

Facial cosmetic and plastic surgery have seen a rapid rise over the years. Blepharoplasty is one of the most commonly carried out surgical procedures. Blepharoplasty surgery is a procedure through which excess skin in the upper lids, as well as the eye bags, are removed.

If you are planning to get eyelid surgery done anytime soon, then understanding the recovery process will aid you in having realistic expectations. Also learning about the eyelid surgery recovery process will help speed up your recovery time after the surgery.

Expectations After Your Procedure:

After your eyelid surgery in Mumbai, you will have to take some time off to recover completely.

There are risks associated which are temporary and are as follows:

  • Watery Eyes
  • Puffy, Numb eyelids
  • Blurred vision (due to prescribed lubricating ointment)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Double vision
  • Swelling or Bruising
  • Slight pain or discomfort

You will need someone to take you home after your discharge from the hospital. Make sure someone is with you during the first night of the surgery. Blepharoplasty cost in India is affordable, which makes the surgery an easy to opt procedure. Check out with your doctor for the surgery plan to be carried out further.

Recovery Time:

The recovery span of the blepharoplasty surgery can be divided into Bruising, Swelling, and Maturation of the scar/incision.

It takes about 1-2 weeks for the bruising to go away. The swelling in the undereye areas is very fluctuating and can last up to 4 or more weeks. It lessens at a gradual pace. You can resume work and other things including going out in public after 10 to 15 days from the surgery. Exercise to be undertaken after 4 weeks will be determined entirely by your comfort level instead of medical reasoning.

After the eyelid surgery, you will have scars caused by the surgical incisions, which will take up to a year or more to fade away and reach their maximum improvement. Practicing an appropriate eyelid surgery recovery system will ensure proper healing of the skin in time.

Tips For Recovery

Once you are aware of the procedure and expectations from blepharoplasty, some recovery tips as mentioned below if followed after eyelid surgery will ensure an appropriate healing and a faster recovery.

Note:Follow your doctor’s instructions strictly and under no circumstances decide to do otherwise or change the course of medications without consulting the doctor first.

Take Time Off:

The Recovery time after the eyelid surgery in India is around 3-4 weeks, and it takes almost a year for the scars to fade away completely. You must take time off from work or daily activities after the surgery. Healing completely will take some time. You might need someone to carry out your responsibilities and handle your work for some time as you cannot put stress on your eyes for a while. You will recover properly only if you take out the proper recovery time that is required.

Follow Self-Care:

Dr. Mohan Thomas suggests a few things to help the recovery process after the surgery. Which are as follows:

  • Clean your eyelids gently
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Use ice packs on your eyes for 24 hours after the surgery only.
  • Use prescribed eye drops or ointments.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses for at least a month after the procedure
  • Do not smoke
  • Sleep with your head raised on two pillows for the first few days after the surgery. Do not sleep on one side

You will require to visit your doctor after a while to get the stitches removed. Before leaving the doctor’s office, make sure to discuss the next steps of the procedure. During the recovery phase, avoid using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen sodium. Make sure to avoid any supplements or medications that might cause bleeding. Get medicines prescribed by the doctor to ease the pain. Consult with your doctor and review the self-care instructions before getting a blepharoplasty so you can be prepared for the recovery process after the eyelid surgery.

Stay Patient

Before eyelid surgery, it is imperative to have realistic expectations. Understanding the process of recovery before getting into the treatment and surgery will help you identify the end goals for your eyes.

After the surgery, your eyelids will probably look puffy. The chances of incisions looking red are also high. The bruising and swelling caused due to the blepharoplasty tend to resemble black eye during the recovery period. To see the final results of the surgery, you have to stay patient, and you will see a positive outcome of the procedure.

Protect Your Eyes

In the initial period after the procedure, it is extremely important to protect your eyes. Your eyes will need protection from sunlight, wind, and other elements at the time of your recovery. If you step out of your house, wear dark sunglasses and a scarf or a hat for protection. It is recommended that you apply sunscreen and follow any other instructions that you are made aware of.

Don’t Stress or Strain:

During the process of recovery, you must avoid any sort of strain caused to your eyes. Avoid watching TV, reading, or checking emails during the initial weeks following the blepharoplasty. It is pretty intelligent to cut down on the screen timing. Give a chance for your eyes to rest. Avoid any sort of activity that can cause dryness in the eyes.

Have a sound sleep:

Your body will automatically heal when you sleep. To speed up recovery, try to get a good night’s sleep. When you feel exhausted, do not worry and focus and relax on your recovery.

Avoid Strenuous Activity

During the first few weeks after the surgery, avoid any sort of strenuous activity. Carrying out aggressive activity can cause bleeding due to an increase in the blood flow to your eyes as well as the blood pressure. The activities that you should avoid are intensive exercise, lifting heavy items, aerobics, and sports.
